Essence Cares! Partnership
In 2006, Essence Magazine, the preeminent lifestyle magazine for
African-American women, designated the National CASA Association as
a member charity of their Essence Cares! program. Essence Cares! is
a call-to-action to every able African-American adult to become a
mentor to a young person. National CASA joins other prominent
partners including the National Urban League and 100 Black Men.
National CASA received a donated full-page, color volunteer
recruitment ad that ran in the December 2006 issue of Essence. The
ad, valued at $69,000, generated over 600 volunteer inquiries for
local CASA programs nationwide.
“We are overjoyed that National CASA is a partner and supporter of
the Essence Cares! mentoring movement,” says Susan L. Taylor,
Editorial Director for Essence. “So many of our children in foster
care are crying out for our help, love and support. National CASA
matches these youngsters with a caring adult, who can advocate for
their best interests and well-being. We are so proud to partner and
motivate our community to become CASA volunteers.”

CASA at the Essence Music Festival
The Essence Music Festival, known as “the party with a purpose,”
is the nation’s largest annual African-American event and the
largest gathering of musical talent in the world. The three-day
event, which combines musical performances with inspirational
seminars, is held in July and attracts more than 25,000 people from
throughout the country. The 2007 event, themed “Coming Home
Celebration—Claiming Our City...Claiming Ourselves," was the first
time the event had been held in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina.
Amid the nation’s top political, faith-based and social leaders who
spoke at the 2007 Empowerment Seminars was a young man named Frankie
Lane. He had been invited by Essence Magazine’s Editorial Director,
Susan L. Taylor, to share his story and tell attendees how they can
empower the thousands of children and youth in foster care by
becoming a CASA or GAL volunteer. After Frankie addressed the crowd,
he was greeted by many of the nearly 500 audience members who were
touched by his personal testimony. Attendees were then encouraged to
visit the CASA recruitment booth to get more information and sign up
to become volunteers.
