There is an overrepresentation of African-American children in
the foster care system—185,000 nationally. As a whole,
African-American volunteers are needed to reflect the diversity in
the children we serve.
Your commitment and dedication are important to your success as a
CASA volunteer. Children in the court system need a strong advocate
who will stand up for them with confidence…an everyday hero. The average volunteer is asked to handle one or two cases per
year, either a single child or a sibling group. If you cannot commit
to that caseload, there are other ways to get involved through your
local CASA program.
Since more than 50% of the African-American children in need are
boys, we have an even greater need for more men to become involved
with CASA programs. Positive male role models are important to the structure
and development of boys and young men in the child welfare system.
"It's all
about caring and common sense. No matter what you do, you're giving
these kids so much more than they've ever had."
